Very good video man. You should really think about making some more videos and educate people..

You can find the cells on ebay. I think it is efficient enough. With all the threats out there to our country, it is a good Idea to have enough solar power to at least run your freezer. Also it pays to heat your water. Watch my other video on how to build a solar water heater.

how can i find the solar cells? and is it really efficient?

  5. markp017719 April, 2013 at 9:06 pm

Yes the prices have come way down but they are using thin glass, only 1/8″. I wish they would use 1/4″. 1/8″ lets more light in but it breaks to easy. 1/4″ is 4 times stronger. I try to build things that will last. 15 years from now mine will still be working and most of the cheap ones would have broke. There waranty does not cover breakage.

is it really worth the hassle theyre getting cheap

You can get more power with a mirror but you get too much heat with it in the summer.

Mark, I have heard that some kid from Sweden has put mirror under one solar panel, that had both sides glass, so he got double power. What do you think about that?

  9. markp017716 April, 2013 at 2:39 am

I do not recommend it. It will crack the cells in the heat of the sun.

  10. ivankempf16 April, 2013 at 12:43 am

    you can use plexi glass

  11. markp017715 April, 2013 at 10:20 pm

It is around 13 to 16% on the cells. You have to charge batteries or you can run a 12 volt 3 amp water pump straight from the panel.

  12. sicho215 April, 2013 at 7:30 pm

what is the efficiency of that cell ? & what loads can i operate ?

I can’t believe that this guy is working on top of the glass where everything is going to rest, why not do it on another “working glass” so you don’t scratch the main glass.

You can buy solar powered cell phone chargers really cheap on ebay. To build your own you need to find the smallest cells you can and them build your frame and glass around 36 of those cells.

I made my first solar panel thanks to this series of videos that you post here on Youtube, but I don’t have a vibrator table so my panel have some air bubbles :-/, and the sylgard 184 are too expensive and one last thing, is that I’ll need to use several panels and they’ll be located on my roof, so it could be very difficult for me to use a hose to cool it down, because I live in Costa Rica and here the sun starts shining since 9 a.m until 4 to 5 p.m. when the panels could became really hot :-<

Yes, Assembly would be more accurate. Factory made panels break easy and warranty does not cover breakage. They only use 1/8″ glass and a thin frame. You can build a better panel cheaper and not be sending your money to China.

That kind of glass is called Low “E” and it is not good for solar panels. Heat is not a problem when you build it the way I show you. Just use 1/4″ clear tempered glass.

Hi Mark0177, sorry to bother you again, but you’re the few ones who really know about solar energy and share your wisdom with anybody; so my question is if I can use an UV resistent glass to avoid the heat of the panel or that kind of glass could decrease also or affect the solar energy production?

Thanks in advanced and I’ll be waiting for your aswer ;->

Lt.

En. I think “assembly” would be more accurate than “How to Build”. And it is very interesting what the price difference between Solar Panel made in factory and the components you buyng, time spent evaluation is not necessary. Thank you for your ansver

36 cells with 4W will give you 144W per panel. do 20 of those and you are done.
